Adevăratele elemente cheie pentru comunicarea empatică sunt înțelegerea și ascultarea activă.

Pentru a-l înțelege cu adevărat pe celălalt, nu trebuie să ne concentrăm pur și simplu atenția asupra poveștii interlocutorului nostru, ci trebuie să punem accentul pe modul în care povestește el, pe nuanțele emoționale ale narațiunii.

Ascultarea activă se poate dovedi a fi un adevărat aliat chiar și în relațiile zilnice ale fiecăruia dintre noi, întrucât ne permite să stabilim un contact autentic unul cu celălalt și deci să începem un tip de comunicare mai eficient și mai profitabil.

Dar ascultarea activă pentru a fi eficientă trebuie să fie empatică, să se asigure că se stabilește un climat de încredere, adoptând o atitudine înțelegătoare, nu interpretând, nu judecând, nu criticând, nu vorbind despre tine, nu schimbând subiectul, nu dând sfaturi care nu au fost cerute.

Folosirea semnalelor de contact este o altă tehnică de promovare a ascultării active: priviri binevoitoare, zâmbete, semne de încuviințare cu capul și fața, toate acestea evidențiind o prezență încurajatoare și liniștitoare.
